What Is Conjunto?

What is El Norteño's Conjunto?

The look, feel and style of El Norteño is a tribute to the music and culture known as Norteño. Norteño music, aka música norteña, is a fun, vibrant, upbeat style of music that was born between the meeting of two cultures. German migrants introduced the button accordion into Central and Southwest Texas in the 19th century. Mexican and Mexican-Americans adopted the instrument and created the genre that became Norteño music. The El Norteño family of products is inspired by a Mexican-Conjunto, which is a group of musicians playing in the Norteño or Tejano style, featuring the accordion and the bajo sexto bass guitar. You see, we love music and music culture. We also love beef jerky, more specifically unique, bold flavors of jerky. We wanted our brand to reflect all the elements of life we love as well as the colorful and passionate Norteño culture so we could pay tribute to the roots of our Mexican recipes and Mexican-style jerky.

Allow us to let the El Norteño band tell it to you in their own words:

Who is El Norteño's Conjunto?
We are a band, a family, a group of bold, free spirits who play música norteña because we love the joy it brings us and to those who listen. Our band is a Mexican-Conjunto band and was born in Texas, the place we live and work - our home. We play traditional Norteño and Tejano music and also put our own modern touches into our songs. Each member brings a unique style and flavor to the group and we always try to pay tribute to those who came before us, those who taught us how to play our instruments.

For example, our Conjunto's leader, is El Cecina, a nickname that comes from his father, a butcher whose gifted hands allowed him to prepare the best Cecina in Mexico using a technique with over 200 years of tradition. El Cecina inherited his father's gifted hands, but when he moved to Texas, he used them to play the most important instrument of the música norteña, el acordeón, and became the fastest accordionist in all the Lone Star State.

El Mango Habanero, who some would consider our star, plays the bajo sexto - the 12-string bass guitar - another essential instrument in música norteña. His playing is bold, daring, fiery, with just a little bit of sweetness. He's also a ladies man!

Our rhythm section, the heartbeat of our Conjunto, is Limón Habanero, AKA "Skinny" - the band's youngest member. He plays the toloche, a bass guitar that he learned when he was just a small boy. His best friend is our drummer - Habanero. He is a jokester who plays the tarola drum. He is always joking around and keeps people on their feet with his rhythm and laughter.

Soon, we will be adding new members to our band. Perhaps a saxophonist? We call ourselves El Norteño (The Northern) because our roots lie in Northern Mexico. When we are on the road, we always carry El Norteño beef jerky and meat sticks with us. The snacks help fuel our fire and keep our passion for music and people alive!
